Photo Trip: Rafting the Colorado

Hello! I just wanted to post some information on my next scheduled photo trip, which will be to the Grand Canyon this March. Along with nine other paddlers, I will be rafting through the canyon on the Colorado River beginning on March 2nd and ending March 26th at Lake Mead. The trip will be guided by Mark Hentz, author of Colombia Whitewater, the first ever whitewater guide book on Columbia. Please visit his website, www.colombiawhitewater.com. During the trip, we will gather a variety of images, including underwater, landscape, action, and lifestyle, along with HD video, to create a coffee table book that preserves the beauty and prestige of one of our planet's greatest landscapes and captures the adventure that nearly 22,000 people attempt each year! Currently, I am seeking a publisher interested in running a story about a self-guided, 24 day rafting expedition through the canyon. Please contact me if you are interested in running a story. Photos and video will be available at the end of March. Thanks for reading, and I will write again post-canyon! Amy

Winter Water Skiing

Happy New Year! I thought I'd share a rather unusual New Year's day experience with you... This year I began 2010 by doing a bit of winter waterskiing near Grand Haven, Michigan! It all went down on a lake that connects with Lake Michigan which had not frozen over yet! Absolutely freezing but worth every second of it. Anyways, I hope this new year is full of success and happiness for you all. -Amy

Surfline: "Bill Me"

Check out one of my swell photos from Montauk, New York in Surfline's Hurricane Bill feature story: http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/breaking-down-hurricane-bills-excellent-run-of-surf-up-and-down-the-east-coast_29904/1/

Hurricane Bill Coverage

As you know, Hurricane Bill sent the East Coast some memorable waves. My last weekend in New York was spent photographing the swell in Montauk, New York in Long Island. Although I live in the crowded center of Manhattan, good surf and solitude is only a couple hours drive away (and very much needed!). feature at the Long Island Press, along with many of my other swell photos. See some of my photos in an online feature in the Long Island Press by clicking Here. Hands down the best waves I've seen on the East Coast. Hope you were able to get out and enjoy the waves!

Aurora Photos Photo-Editing Internship

On August 27th, I will be wrapping up my internship at National Geographic Adventure in NYC to intern with one of their clients, Aurora Photos. Aurora is a stock photo agency that "specializes in outdoor adventure, lifestyle & sports, travel, cultures and journalism". Their Outdoor Collection is the world's premier source for the widest range of, and highest quality, outdoor and adventure imagery. Aurora is based in Portland, Maine, with sales offices in New York, California, and London, England. Aurora's assignment division, Aurora Select, is located in New York, and a multimedia and video production sister company, Aurora Novus, is located in Los Angeles, California.

The internship will involve "working with photographs taken by some of the best photographers in the world and marketing them to potential buyers". I'll also "work with national and international photo users, both editorial and commercial, to carry out requests and fulfill research projects". I'll be in Portland, Maine for this internship from August 31st until the end of December.

National Geographic Internship

Its been a while since my last post, but I have some fun news! Starting May 5, I will be starting a photo-research internship in New York City at the National Geographic Adventure magazine. The internship is four months, and some of the duties include routing photography materials, learning magazine production, conducting photo research on future story assignments, assist with stock photo research, and administrative photo organization. This work will be conducted under their photo editor. The NG Adventure magazine is published by the National Geographic society, and is intended for "imaginative people who like to try new outdoor pursuits and want to travel to wild corners of the planet". In addition, Adventure "inspires readers through profiles of remarkable explorers, past and present; travel narratives to amazing destinations; stories of exhilarating excursions closer to home; and accounts of ambitious expeditions...".  All for now!

Take a Moment... Sign a Petition

My heart goes out to the Hawaiians who are trying to save their beaches, surf spots, and culture on the North Shore. If you get a moment, sign their petition to stop the construction of up to 5 hotels in the Turtle Bay area by clicking HERE. I suppose every little bit helps. It is sad to me that there are still people who choose to remain ignorant to the truth; our resources on this earth are limited. Nearly all the beaches here in Florida are developed or over-developed, and with it comes consequences. The Florida Keys and Everglades (just one example), once full of living coral and clean water, are now part of the world's largest eco-restoration project. Florida beaches don't even compare to the beauty of Hawaiian beaches, and it would be such a loss to this planet for them to become developed and polluted. Sad!
